The only American Eagle bullion coin with designs not inspired by historic US coins is the American Platinum Eagle. Introduced in 1997, the Platinum Eagle has been offered in BU and Proof versions in the years since. The design of Liberty that has long graced the obverse is the work of John Mercanti, then an Assistant Engraver with the United States Mint.
